I think the new smooth slider is best suited for paths created with the pencil or paint brush tools. Because those paths tend to be jittery and have too many anchor points, especially when drawing with a mouse. Also you can use the smooth slider on just part of a path by selecting those anchor points with the direct select tool and then smoothing them out. It definitely works better than the smooth tool.
